About
Pelham Together's paid summer internship program provides high school students with an opportunity to build leadership and job readiness skills and experience by participating in various projects working with different community leaders and professionals as mentors. You can find a list of mentors from summer 2023 here.
Interns interview with adult volunteers as part of the selection process and complete a written application (Application for Summer 2024 opens on March 1, 2024 and is due on April 1, 2024).
Interns participate in a mandatory local networking event on May 16, 2024 in the evening and the mandatory 3-day leadership training in July (7/22-7/24/24) including a Meet and Greet session with all mentors. Following the training, interns complete their 3-week placement at a local or locally-connected organization, business, or group, and are paid minimum wage ($16/hour as of 1/1/24).
Interns work on various job readiness skills through fun, interactive activities—getting to know one another, learning about their own leadership styles, and developing communication skills that will assist them in their internship placement.
Following the training, interns carry out an internship at one of several partnering organizations, ranging from local government and civic groups to education, business, the arts, and non-profits. Each intern is matched according to interests and skills and works on a project designed by that group. Pelham Together also hosts a group of interns who design youth events and awareness campaigns for the upcoming school year.
The internship placement last 3-4 weeks for a total of 30 hours, with exact dates and times coordinated between the organization and the intern. Typically, interns work approximately 10 hours per week and attend a weekly check-in with the whole intern group organized by Pelham Together. Interns are paid minimum wage for all work hours. Eligible candidates must be students who live in Pelham entering grades 9-12 in the fall following their internship, but do not have to attend Pelham Memorial High School. All interns are expected to participate in some element of Pelham Together youth work (Youth Council, Pelicones, youth events, etc.) once the school year begins to continue their work as leaders in the community. All internship work hours are paid at minimum wage.
The schedule for Summer 2024 is below. As in previous years, the schedule allows young people the flexibility to tack this experience on to another job or volunteer commitment.
For mentoring organizations
By becoming a partnering organization who hosts an intern, you are an important source of connection, mentoring, and leadership development for the young people in Pelham. Organizations can range in sector from government and civic organizations to education, business, the arts, non-profit. The requirements for the partnering agency is that they agree to host and mentor an intern (or more) for a period of 3 weeks for up to a maximum of 10 hours per week (exact dates and times are flexible and coordinated between the organization and the student). Mentors also attend a Meet & Greet lunch scheduled during the leadership training in order for students and supervisors to meet one another prior to placement. Interns are required to attend a weekly lunch with Pelham Together staff to share their internship experiences with their fellow interns and receive on-going support and guidance.
Project work for each intern is specific to the needs of the sponsoring entity, and every effort is made to match an intern that meets the requirements of the sponsor and has an interest in that field. The more defined a scope of the project, the better able PT is to make a successful match between mentor and intern. Mentors should describe the work to be done and any requirements or preferences in the application to be a mentor.
Interns are matched based on interest and availability. The intern is paid minimum wage for work hours, and mentoring organizations/employers can choose to sponsor an intern at two levels—stipend only ($550) or stipend plus training ($750).
