Summer 2020 Internships - Applications Open
Pelham Together's paid summer internship program provides high school students with an opportunity to build leadership and job readiness skills and experience by participating in various projects working with different community leaders as mentors.
Interns interview with adult volunteers as part of the selection process and complete a written application.
As an introduction to the 3-week session, interns will participate in a Leadership Retreat facilitated by an expert in the field of youth development.
Interns work on various job readiness skills through fun, interactive activities—getting to know one another, learning about their own leadership styles, and developing communication skills that will assist them in their internship placement.
Following the Retreat, interns carry out an internship at one of several partnering organizations, ranging from local government and civic groups to education, business, the arts, and non-profits. Each intern will be matched with a partnering group, and the intern will work on a project designed by that group. Pelham Together also hosts a group of interns who design youth events and awareness campaigns for the upcoming school year.
The internship placement last 3 weeks for a total of 30 hours, with exact dates and times coordinated between the organization and the intern. Typically, interns work approximately 10 hours per week and attend a weekly check-in with the whole intern group. Eligible candidates must be students who live in Pelham entering grades 9-12 in the fall following their internship, but do not have to attend Pelham Memorial High School. All interns are expected to become part of the Pelham Together Youth Leadership Council once the school year begins to continue their work as leaders in the community. The internship is a paid position at minimum wage.
The internship schedule for Summer 2020 is outlined below. The schedule allows for flexibility for young people to tack this experience on to another job or volunteer commitment. To apply to be an intern, click here.
FOR MENTORING ORGANIZATIONS
By becoming a partnering organization who hosts an intern, you are an important source of connection, mentoring, and leadership development for the young people in Pelham. Organizations can range in sector from government and civic organizations to education, business, the arts, non-profit. The only requirements for the partnering agency is that they agree to host and mentor an intern (or two) for a period of 3 weeks for up to a maximum of 10 hours per week, with exact dates and times coordinated between the organization and the student. There is a Meet & Greet lunch (July 28, 2020 for this summer) prior between interns and mentors as part of the training, allowing students and supervisors to meet one another prior to placement. Project work is specific to the needs of the sponsoring entity, and an effort is made to define the scope of a specific project as much as possible. It is important to Pelham Together that the organizations take seriously the mentoring role and consider their ability to do so when signing up for the program. Pelham Together provides a "toolkit" of helpful tips when working with young people in a mentoring role.
Interns are matched based on interest and availability. The intern is paid minimum wage ($15/hr for 2020), and Mentoring organizations can choose to cover the full salary ($450/intern), split with Pelham Together ($225/intern), or sponsor an intern in full (salary & training; $750/intern). Interns are required to attend a weekly lunch with Pelham Together to share their internship experiences with their fellow interns.
